ESD Control Program Internal Auditor

Plan, perform and report internal audits of an ESD control program against ANSI/ESD S20.20-2021 and IEC 61340-5-1

Short course · 3 hours · Certificate does not expire

An ESD control program fails silently. A mat cord breaks inside its insulation, a floor is polished with the wrong product, a night shift stops logging strap tests, and nothing changes at the bench. The parts pass test and fail in service. The daily and monthly compliance checks are the first defence, and the internal audit is the check on the checks: are they done, honestly, everywhere, with working instruments, against a plan that still matches the building. This course teaches you to perform that audit.

You start with the three kinds of ESD audit, the stack of criteria you audit against, the audit principles of ISO 19011:2026 applied to ESD, and ANSI/ESD S20.20-2021 read as an audit map, with IEC 61340-5-1:2024 as its aligned international equivalent. You then plan an audit: a risk-based program that covers stores, goods-in, rework, shipping, engineering labs and field service as well as the assembly floor, a document review that reads records for patterns rather than ticks, a checklist that follows the route a part takes through the building, sampling you choose yourself, and clear rules for when you measure and when you review the site's verification records. Module 3 audits the administrative requirements: the plan (7.1), training (7.2), product qualification (7.3) and compliance verification (7.4), with the interview questions, the records to pull and the findings that recur. Module 4 audits the floor: grounding (8.1), personnel grounding (8.2), the EPA with its insulators, isolated conductors and ionizers (8.3), packaging (8.4) and marking (8.5), tracing an item from goods-in to shipping, spot measurements and what they do and do not prove, disagreement at the bench and suspected ESD events as an audit item. The final module covers writing findings that stand up, grading, the closing meeting and report, root cause for ESD findings, verifying corrective action, feeding the QMS under ISO 9001:2026, AS9100D and ISO 13485:2016, preparing for customer and certification audits, auditing suppliers, and metrics. Three scenarios close the course: a night shift strap log with gaps, a kitting bench outside the EPA, and a year of identical ionizer readings.

The course is for quality engineers, internal auditors and ESD coordinators who audit their own site's ESD control program, or their suppliers' programs, at electronics, aerospace, defense and medical device sites. It builds on the PlanetISO ESD Awareness course and sits beside ESD Control Program Coordinator: ANSI/ESD S20.20 and ESD Compliance Verification Technician: ESD TR53. It is not the EOS/ESD Association ESD Control Program Auditor certification and does not qualify you to perform third-party facility certification audits; it prepares you to audit as an internal or second-party auditor and to arrive at those audits without surprises.

The course closes with a 20-question examination drawn from a bank of 30. On passing you receive a PlanetISO Certificate of Completion with lifetime access to the course content and your certificate. The certificate does not expire.

What people learn

  • Explain why an ESD control program must be audited, distinguish internal, customer and facility certification audits, and state what this course does and does not qualify you to do.
  • Identify the audit criteria stack for an ESD audit and read ANSI/ESD S20.20-2021 clauses 6 to 8 as an audit map, mapping IEC 61340-5-1:2024 requirements to it by content.
  • Build a risk-based ESD audit program and an audit plan that cover every area where sensitive items are handled, review documents for patterns, and select your own sample of benches, people and records.
  • Audit the plan, training, product qualification and compliance verification requirements of clauses 7.1 to 7.4 using open interview questions and records traced to the floor.
  • Audit grounding, personnel grounding, the EPA, packaging and marking under clauses 8.1 to 8.5 by observation, tracing and correctly taken spot measurements, and state what a measurement does and does not prove.
  • Write findings with requirement, evidence and nonconformity statement, grade them as the site defines, run a closing meeting and produce a report a customer could read.
  • Assess root cause and corrective action for ESD findings, verify effectiveness, feed results into the QMS internal audit and corrective action processes, and audit suppliers who handle your sensitive items.
